The act was later amended in 1987 to include residential hot water tanks, and the final phase took effect in 2015, requiring tanks to have a set lifespan.

Hybrid electric water heaters are gaining popularity but early failures may be attributed to manufacturers rushing to meet energy conservation act deadlines, leading to a negative perception among consumers and professionals.

Water Heaters Plus! offers repair services for heat pump hybrid models, which are significantly improved compared to first-generation models. It's important to note that the refrigerant and compressor of these units are part of a sealed system. If this system fails during the warranty period, the manufacturer will replace the entire unit. However, after the warranty has expired, any refrigerant or compressor failures will require the unit to be replaced.

Did you know that hybrid water heaters can make a noise similar to an old refrigerator due to the heating process? Additionally, they can lower the temperature of the room they are in by 3-5 degrees but also have the added benefit of dehumidifying the area. This makes them a great option for basement locations as it eliminates the need for a separate dehumidifier. However, it's important to note that hybrids require a lot of air space to operate properly. If installed inside a closet or small room, ducting will need to be installed to allow the hybrid water heater adequate air space. Without the required air space, the hybrid will operate as a standard water heater and will provide virtually no energy savings over a standard water heater.

It is advisable to choose a water heater warranty that corresponds with the length of time you plan to reside in your home. This is because most new water heaters tend to last only a year or two beyond the warranty period. While the industry claims that they are built to last for the warranty period and one additional day, we have witnessed numerous instances where the units fail just a few months after the warranty period.

If your water heater fails during the warranty period, you are entitled to receive a brand new heater without any pro-rated fees. If the supply house or store charges any fees, they will provide you with a full warranty on the new tank. In case of an even exchange, the new tank will inherit the remaining warranty of the previous water heater. It is important to note that 12 year tanks should only be replaced with 12 year tanks, and the same applies to 9 and 6 year models.

You don't need a receipt for warranty purposes. The tank's serial number indicates its manufacture date, since receipts typically don't last 12 years.
